THE MARK OF EXCELLENCE
The U.K.C. DNA-VIP Program - VIP stands for:
Verified Identified Parentage. Every dog whose parentage
has been DNA verified through U.K.C. will receive a Certificate of DNA
Analysis on which the genetic profile is displayed as a series of paired
letters and also a bar code. The Certificate of DNA Analysis will feature
a special U.K.C. DNA-VIP seal.
The U.K.C. DNA-P Seal-For those dogs that have been profiled but
whose parents are not profiled, U.K.C. has reserved the special designation,
DNA-P, to recognize the genetic identification of the dog.
Contribute to Genetic Database-Data obtained through individual
canine profiling will be confidentially maintained by U.K.C. No personal
information will be disseminated or tracked. The group data, however,
will be available to researchers and breeders interested in improving
canine genetic health. DNA from samples will be archived at PE AgGen for
a period of at least five years to allow for future testing at the owner's
option.
Breeder Integrity-A U.K.C. DNA-VIP pedigree is a symbol of breeder
integrity. Breeders may use the U.K.C.-DNA seals in their advertisments
when the dogs are U.K.C.Profiled or Verified. This will enhance the breeder's
reputation and the value of their dogs.
WHAT IS DNA?
DNA is the genetic blueprint found in every living cell-skin, hair,
blood, semen, etc.
A DNA sample smaller than a grain of sand can accurately establish or
verify any dog's:
IDENTITY
PARENTAGE
PEDIGREE
WHAT CAN DNA TESTING DO FOR YOU?
When analyzed in the laboratory, a dog's DNA reveals a unique pattern-its
DNA profile.
DNA profiles allow you to:
Establish a permanent
record of identity for any dog
-Microchips and tattoos can be altered or destroyed.
Guarantee puppy
buyers a solid pedigree
Puppies sold as "VIP-eligible" provide added assurance of ancestry.
Determine individual
paternity for separtely sired siblings
When more than one sire is used, litters can now be U.K.C.-registered
with proof of parentage.
Provide bitch
owners with a guaranteed stud service
A stud's profile can be compared to any offspring to give absolute proof
of paternity. Stud owners can be assured that matings to other dogs have
not taken place. Avoids the uncertainty of unobserved stud service.
Verify artificial
insemination
With a DNA profile, providers of fresh, chilled or frozen semen can guarantee
identification to bitch owners. Puppy buyers can assume they are obtaining
the correct bloodlines.
Resolve breeding
disputes
Owners have a foolproof method to resolve any disputes over records of
parentage.

PROFILE ANALYSIS
To prepare a DNA Profile, the lab identifies at least
ten different genetic locations, called "loci." At each location,
there is a single pair of genes. One of the pair was inherited from the
dog's sire and one from the dam. If, for example, the first location identified
on an individual dog has genes labeled "B" and "Y,"
that means that the dog inherited a "B" gene from one parent
and a "Y" gene from the other. When the parents are tested,
the same location will be examined. To continue this hypothetical example,
assume there are two possible sires. Sire #1 is the only one of the two
sires capable of producing that combination. Sire #2 is excluded as a
possible parent. One match by itself is not enough to be certain that
Sire #1 and this dam are the parents of the profiled dog, but these two
are the parents of the dog.

This technology is capable of verifying parentage, even when the
two sires and dam are closley related.
